I Casali di Monticchio

“Cashmere throws and Bulgari bath products are not the sort of luxuries you expect to find in an agriturismo, but Monticchio, as well as being a working organic farm, is also a stylish retreat. More home than hotel, it has classy accommodation and excellent food in a blissfully remote setting half an hour’s drive from Orvieto.

A bone-shaking drive along an untarred road leads to the old borgo (hamlet), built on a high ridge with sweeping views, that Liria Costantino restored in the 1990s and now runs with her children. The main building, with its low-beamed ceilings, exposed-brick walls and large terrace, houses a series of comfortable sitting rooms (stocked with books and magazines, laid-back jazzy soundtracks and help-yourself drinks) and five romantic bedrooms decorated in modern country style in muted tones.Families or groups of friends can opt for an apartment in one of the other buildings, or rent a whole house. There is a terrace overlooking the vines, olive trees, banks of rosemary and roses, a kitchen garden and a pool set in smooth lawns. A spa was opened in early 2011. Talented chef Bernardo Costantino creates superb meals (and gives cookery classes) using produce from the garden and surrounding woods. If you’re lucky, that might even include truffles.”

Room to book: ‘Gli Angeli’ in the main house is a large suite with a fireplace and aseparate living room/kitchenette. 34 Vocabolo Monticchio, Allerona, Orvieto (00 39 0763 628365; http://www.monticchio.com)
